Psychologist explains what your pet’s social media account reveals about you

Dedicated social media accounts for pets have exploded in popularity, turning ordinary dogs, cats, and even reptiles into digital celebrities. Some of these animals now boast follower counts in the millions and generate substantial income through brand partnerships. But according to clinical psychologist Dr. Melanie Green, the decision to create and maintain such an account often reveals more about the owner than the pet.

Dr. Green suggests that curating a pet's online presence frequently serves as a form of identity extension. "When you post as your pet, you are not just sharing cute photos," she explains. "You are projecting an idealized version of care, humor, or lifestyle that you want to be associated with." For many, the pet becomes a safe avatar through which they can express affection, wit, or even vulnerability without the direct scrutiny that comes with posting about oneself.

The phenomenon also taps into a need for community. Owners who manage these accounts often find themselves part of a niche group where the shared focus is on the animal, which can lower social barriers. However, Dr. Green notes a potential downside: when the account starts generating income or fame, the line between genuine companionship and performance can blur. The pet's needs may take a backseat to content creation schedules, leading to stress for the animal.

the psychologist argues that a pet account is not inherently problematic. It becomes an issue only when the online persona overshadows the real, living creature. The healthiest approach, she says, is to keep the account as a fun side project, not a primary source of validation. If the pet is happy and the owner is honest about their motives, there is little harm in letting a furry friend take over the feed. But if the likes and comments start driving daily routines, it may be time to log off and take the dog for a walk instead.
