Where biology meets behavior

Where biology meets behavior

The University of Utah has officially launched a new undergraduate major in neuroscience, designed to bridge the gap between biological processes and human behavior. Starting in the fall semester, students will be able to enroll in a program that combines coursework from the College of Science, the College of Social and Behavioral Science, and the School of Medicine.

The interdisciplinary major aims to give students a comprehensive understanding of how the brain functions at the molecular, cellular, and systemic levels, while also exploring how those mechanisms influence thought, emotion, and action. University officials say the program was created in response to growing student demand and the rapid expansion of neuroscience research.

Students in the program will take core classes in biology, psychology, and chemistry before moving into specialized topics such as neural development, cognitive neuroscience, and neuropharmacology. The curriculum also includes a required laboratory component and opportunities for undergraduate research. Faculty members hope the hands-on experience will prepare graduates for careers in medicine, research, biotechnology, and mental health fields.

The new major replaces a previous neuroscience minor and a set of loosely connected courses. Administrators expect the program to attract students who are interested in the intersection of hard science and human experience. The university plans to hire additional faculty to support the growing program over the next few years.
