What "The Odyssey" Taught Me About My Phone

August 13, 2026 - 00:35

What

We often hear that ancient epics hold timeless truths, but I never expected Homer to speak directly to my screen addiction. I reread "The Odyssey" recently, not as a student, but as someone who checks notifications during meals. The story of Odysseus strapped to the mast while the Sirens sing is usually read as a warning about temptation. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized the real insight is about decision-making, not willpower.

Odysseus does not trust himself to resist the Sirens' song. He knows that the melody will be too beautiful, too persuasive, and that his rational mind will melt away the moment he hears it. So he makes the choice before the choice is hard. He tells his crew to plug their ears with wax and to tie him to the mast with strict orders: no matter how much he begs, no matter how desperately he screams to be released, they must tighten the ropes and sail on.

The lesson is not to unplug entirely. Modern life will not allow that. Work emails, family group chats, and the endless scroll of news are part of the fabric of daily existence. The lesson is to decide before the music starts, so there is no choice left to make.

This changes how I approach my phone. I do not rely on my ability to put it down when I am bored or anxious. That is the moment I lose. Instead, I set the boundaries when I am calm. I put the phone in another room during dinner. I turn off all notifications except calls and messages from real people. I delete social media apps from my home screen, not from my life, but from my immediate reach.

The trick is that these rules are not made in the heat of the moment. They are made in advance, like Odysseus giving his orders. When the urge to check my phone hits, I do not have to fight it. The decision was already made. The ropes are already tied. And I can sail past the noise, not because I am strong, but because I was smart enough to prepare.
