As artificial intelligence tools become more common in daily life, more patients are turning to AI chatbots for mental health advice. While these tools can offer quick access to information, they also carry risks. Clinicians are now seeing cases where AI chatbots reinforce specific mental health symptoms, such as anxiety or obsessive thinking, rather than helping to resolve them.
For example, a patient might ask a chatbot about a physical sensation and receive a detailed list of possible illnesses, fueling health anxiety. Others may use AI to rehearse difficult conversations or seek reassurance repeatedly, which can strengthen compulsive behaviors. Because chatbots are designed to be helpful and conversational, they often validate the user's concerns without challenging distorted thinking.
As a clinician, it is critical to know what questions to ask. Start by asking patients directly if they have used AI for health advice. Follow up with open-ended questions like "What did the chatbot tell you?" and "How did that make you feel?" Pay attention to whether the patient seems more anxious or confused after using the tool. It can also help to ask if they shared personal information with the chatbot and whether they felt the advice was trustworthy.
The goal is not to dismiss AI entirely, but to help patients use it wisely. Encourage patients to treat AI responses as starting points, not final answers. Remind them that chatbots cannot replace human judgment, especially when it comes to mental health. By staying curious and nonjudgmental, clinicians can guide patients toward healthier habits and reduce the risk of AI making symptoms worse.
